Biferno rosso palladino
Grapes: 15% Aglianico / 70% Montepulciano / 15% Trebbiano
Style: Medium body, smooth
This wine comes from Molise - the second smallest region of Southern Italy, bordering
Abruzzo, Lazio, Campania and Puglia. Its wines began to gain recognition in the
1980s with the creation of the Biferno and Pentro di Isernia DOCs. The Biferno is a
Montepulciano and Aglianico blend, the former from the Adriatic coast and the latter
from the warmer inland areas. The wine is typical of the appellation, bold and power-
ful, with a real rustic warmth to it. It has received universally glowing reviews from
wine writers like Jancis Robinson MW and Olly Smith.
A purply-red colour that will develop to garnet with age. The bouquet is complex
and intense with hints of blackberry jam. On the palate the wine is velvety and harmonious with pleasant, firm tannins. The wine pairs well with roast meats, game
or salami and chorizo and, of course, pizza!
