Grapes: Shiraz / Grenache / Mourvèdre
Style: Big, bold
This wine was sourced from some of the original vines on the Turkey Flat property, where bush turkeys once roamed, planted and cared for by Ernest Schulz. The name derives from Ernest's butcher's shop which prepared and delivered meat and other goods to Tanunda and surrounding districts in the 1860's.
The Butcher's Block Red is a traditional Barossa blend, made from grapes selected from the Turkey Flat vineyards, including some from the original old vine plantings. It is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre (Mataro) which exhibits all the distinctive qualities of these varietals, the proportions of which vary from vintage to vintage.
The nose is floral with dark plum, violets and hints of clove, cherry and juniper berry. The palate shows juicy, sweet lifted fruits with a hint of gaminess and creamy vanillin oak character. An elegant and restrained wine with a velvety finish, which can be enjoyed now or cellared for 5-10 years.
