Rosé wines have enjoyed a huge surge in popularity since the early 2000s and are particularly popular with younger consumers.

The summer months are when demand for rosé is often at its highest, as it is light, refreshing and not too sweet—ideal for afternoon and evening drinking.

Without going into too much detail, a lot of modern rosé wine combines the techniques of white winemaking and applies it to red grapes. There is often very little contact time with the skins of the red grapes as the wine is being made—just enough to give the wine a distinct pink colour, while keeping the wine fresh, fruity and flavoursome.

A slight variation on this process is to blend red and white wine together. Technically, this would not be a rosé, but a ‘blush’ wine. Although in mainstream usage, all pink wines tend to be referred to as rosé.
