Prosecco & Champagne FAQs
Is Prosecco the same as Champagne?
No, their similarity comes from the fact that both Prosecco and Champagne are sparkling, but they are not the same wine. Both Prosecco and Champagne however are both intrinsicly linked to the region of production. Its a famously known fact that it can only be called Champagne it is it produced in the Champagne region. Prosecco is simlar in that it is produced primarily in Veneto, Italy.
What is the main difference between Prosecco and Champagne?
There are differences in both the grapes used, and the production methods. Chamapgne is made using a single grape or blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Prosecco is made from the Glera grape. The differences in production method are both in how they are fermented, and as a result, how the bubbles come about.
Why is Champagne more expensive than Prosecco?
There are two reasons for this. The first is the second fermentation occurs in the bottle, whereas with Prosecco this is done in tanks. The result is a longer and more expensive process. The second is pure marketing. Champagne holds the prestige we all know of, whereas Prosecco doesn't. Products are therefore priced accordingly.
